Build A School in Sanyang
We have recently launched a Buy A Brick Campaign to enable The Gambia Reality to fund the building of a much needed nursery school in the centre of Sanyang village. A plot of land has been donated to the charity by the O'Bojang family for this purpose. Although Sanyang has a nursery school, it is not central and not easily accessible to young children. The new school building will be right next to the new marketplace which is the hub of the village.
Nursery schools are not recognised by the government in The Gambia so attract no government funding. Primary education doesn't start until the age of 7 years. It is important for children in every culture to start their education at a young age which is why the people of Sanyang are keen to see this project get underway. The nursery school will provide basic education for children between the ages of 2 and 7 years. We are hoping to attract approx. 100 children.
The cost of the materials to build the school is £7000. It will be run on a voluntary basis until it is established.
We are asking people to donate £1 per brick for this project.
Anyone wishing to donate please go to the contact page and pay via paypal or email me for more information.
We are also selling The Gambia Reality TShirts with all profits from the sales going to this campaign. For details of the shirts please visit our news page.
Sanyang is a South Kombo Village and is accessed by the main Kombo coastal highway. It is a traditional, rural community whose large population is mainly Mandinka,Fula, Wolof and Jola. The main trades in Sanyang are farming and fishing. In the marketplace women trade fruit and vegetables which are grown in the village vegetable plots. By day the men can be seen fishing with drag nets from their pirogues and then landing their catch on the beach at Sanyang Fishing Centre. The women will then take the fish to market to sell.
